Come witness some of Malaysia’s brightest young wind, brass and percussion musicians perform with the Outreach Band and saxophone soloist Mohd Shahrizal Kamal (winner of the Malaysian Wind Music Prize 2023) under the baton of music director Cheryl Mah and guest conductor, Damrih Banawitayakit, from the Silpakorn University Thailand.

An outreach collaborative project initiated by The klpac Symphonic Band and made possible by a community of music educators and professional musicians, An Uncommon Journey III welcomes 61 musicians aged 12 to 22 from Klang Valley, Perak, Negeri Sembilan and Malacca. As they embark on this enriching and inspiring musical and cultural experience, they will benefit from instrumental clinics by UCSI University and members of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra and the Radio Television Malaysia Orchestra, network with some of our finest musicians, perform under the esteemed conductors and collaborate with a soloist.

The highlight of the concert will be Ong Jiin Joo’s new composition Nada Ragam Melayu II, a set piece for the Malaysia International Wind Festival 2024, Yukiko Nishimura’s Ancient Flower, Adam Gorb’s Bridgewater Breeze as well as a series of pieces from Thailand.

Special thanks to scholarship sponsors The Flute Store, EP Winds, KOJEREEDS, LCM Music, Band Store and Percussion Store.

About The klpac Symphonic Band
Soon after The klpac Orchestra was formed, The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac) established The klpac Symphonic Band in 2009 which made its debut with “Friendship in Concert”.

Like the other music ensembles under klpac, The klpac Symphonic Band is a community-oriented initiative aimed at providing a platform for brass, wind and percussion players to hone their skills and perform regularly. It was established to fill a gap in the local music scene where many band musicians who started playing during their schooling years were left with no avenue to grow and pursue their interest after leaving school. Its members are musicians and music lovers from different backgrounds and age groups who are admitted based on an audition.

Apart from its sold out “Back to the Classics” concert, the band initiated an all-important Outreach Collaborative Project in 2022 with fellow music educators and over 50 musicians, some from out-of-state, which culminated in a concert entitled “An Uncommon Journey”. On the audience development front, the band also debuted its “Music Play Date” which was an interactive, family-friendly concert held outdoors.

The klpac Symphonic Band has been under the leadership of its Music Director and Resident Conductor Cheryl Mah since 2011. The band’s “Ultimate Music Crawl” concert bagged the “BEST OF 2019” Award at the 17th BOH Cameronian Arts Awards 2020.
