Step into the magic of Malaysian folklore with FOLKTALES IN BATIK! Performed by 100 students from The Actors Studio Academy @ klpac, this lively show brings traditional Malaysian stories to life with vibrant batik-inspired costumes, captivating music, and timeless tales. Perfect for all ages, FOLKTALES IN BATIK celebrates Malaysia’s rich heritage and the bright talent of tomorrow.

FOLKTALES IN BATIK is part of the students’ final showcase and concludes the third semester of The Actors Studio Academy’s Speech and Drama programme for 2024.

The Actors Studio Academy @ klpac’s popular Pre-School Speech & Drama Programme (3 to 6 years old) and Speech & Drama Programme (7 to 18 years old) runs all year round with three semesters per year and a choice of Saturday and Sunday classes. Synopsis

  1. Tiger’s Pickled Eyeball
    Directed & Written by Teacher Jeremy Ang; Performed by Amazing Primary Group
    Sang Kancil (Mousedeer) and their family are terrified by a hungry tiger on the prowl. But fear not! With a dash of quick thinking and a very unusual snack suggestion, they cook up a plan to send the tiger packing—and a bear…. too, perhaps? A hilarious tale of wit, survival, and one very questionable “eyeball”?!
  2. Spirit of Bambarayon – Part 1
    Directed & Written by Axyr William; Performed by Brilliant Primary

    In the beginning, two powerful gods brought forth a daughter, and peace reigned over the land—until disaster struck. As calamity threatened their people, Kinoingan, the father, embarked on a perilous journey in search of answers, leaving behind his wife, Suminondu, and their daughter, Pinozubung. On the sacred peak of a mountain, Suminondu is faced with an agonizing decision—one that will forever alter the fate of their people and the land they cherish.
  3. Spirit of Bambarayon – Part 2
    Directed & Written by Axyr William; Performed by Energetic Primary

    With the crops withering and despair creeping in, Suminondu must make a heart-shattering choice. Pinozubung, in a selfless act of love, offers herself as a sacrifice, a decision that shakes the very fabric of the world. Her sacrifice not only saves the land but also ensures the prosperity of future generations. The spirit of Pinozubung, now Bambarayon, lives on, a powerful reminder of the bond between life, sacrifice, and the earth.

    Devised by Teacher Farah Rani & Students; Performed by Courageous Secondary

    A humble fisherman, Badang, gains immense strength from a magical encounter, becoming the most legendary warrior of ancient times.
  5. Princess Santubong and Princess Sejinjang
    Directed & Written by Teacher Jeremy Ang; Performed by Dynamic Primary

    Two celestial sisters, Princess Santubong and Princess Sejinjang, engage in a battle for supremacy over beauty and skill. Their rivalry shatters the peace of Sarawak, causing chaos among the people as mountains tremble and villages flood. Will they ever admit to the destruction they caused?

    A well-known legend of beauty, betrayal, and a powerful curse, Mahsuri’s innocent blood stains the fate of Langkawi for generations.

About The Actors Studio Academy @klpac
Founded by Dato’ Dr. Faridah Merican and Joe Hasham OAM, The Actors Studio Academy is a pioneer in arts education in Malaysia. 

The Academy’s very first class in 1992 comprised theatre luminaries and the crème de la crème of the industry today such as Tiara Jacquelina Eu, Patrick Teoh, Leslie Dawson, Ramli Hassan, Jeffery Nicholson and Fawziah Nawi.

Students from as young as three years old have a clear pathway to grow with us, learn from artiste-educators with hands-on experience in the industry and enjoy klpac’s full-fledged professional facilities.

Besides its year-round Speech and Drama programmes, the Academy also customise specialist training programmes for arts groups, schools, drama teachers as well as corporates under its corporate training arm. It also conducts outreach programmes for the underprivileged and underserved.
