About Wicked Music People
Wicked Music People (WMP) is dedicated to the performance of early music (vocal and instrumental music of the late Renaissance and the Baroque). Guided by modern sensibilities, we believe in incorporating performance practice disciplines, research in to historical techniques and musical sources. We use period instruments when possible, such as the baroque violin, viola da gamba, and harpsichord.
The group started in January 2017, playing small, intimate concerts at the Wicked Pancake Parlour. Over the years, we have taken our performances to diverse venues such as cafes, temples, churches and heritage warehouses. Aside from performing baroque music concerts, we’ve hosted outreach demonstrations, workshops and collaborated with other music groups and educational institutions in Malaysia. WMP have been featured in festivals such as OperaKUL and the George Town Festival, and have staged several concerts and recitals at the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas.
One of our proudest moments to date is building our own harpsichord, which you will hear at this concert!
Today, Baroque music is usually played in a modern concert setting, often by large ensembles using instruments designed to maximise volume, projection and other key aesthetic qualities of the Romantic and modern eras. By contrast, period performance on historical instruments is much more intimate and sensitive—exploring a different range of expressive qualities such as articulation, ornamentation, and improvisation, all serving the goal of accessing the emotions and intentions of the composer and the music. We hope to share our experience of that world with you.
